Meteorology is fundamental for sailing safety and is the very essence of strategy for winning any regatta. It is also the science most directly linked to ocean sailing.Whether you are already a sailing fan or not, on this course you can learn about the mechanics of global weather and what knowledge of that sailors require. You will learn about the foundations of ocean meteorology, how digital files are generated based on prediction models and how sailors receive these via satellite and then integrate them into high-performance navigation software. This knowledge is useful both in sailing and in other activities conditioned by meteorology across the planet. You will also learn how to analyse the meteorological characteristics of the Barcelona World Racecourse, which crosses up to 12 different climate zones, with the boats going up against some of the world's most extreme weather phenomena. The regatta takes the yachts through the Mediterranean Sea, the North and South Atlantic, the Indian and South Pacific Oceans. You will learn how to use thefoundations of climate and meteorology strategy to win a regatta and you will gain insight into how the sailors experience this science first hand as they race across the oceans. To follow the course it is recommended that you have some basic knowledge of meteorology. When the course has been completed, students may request a certificate from the University of Barcelona (UB).
The sailors in a round the world regatta, race around the globe from west to east for three months, sailing in watches of four hours. They sail down the Atlantic from north to south, with little variation in longitude, but descending the latitudes of the planet, going from the northern winter to the southern summer. They them round Antarctica, crossing longitudes, gaining a day on the calendar as they go. A situation like this takes its toll on their biological clocks and sleep patterns and their cognitive capacity and physical performance are affected. In this course you will learn the foundations of the biological patterns governing sleep and performance in general, it's application to solo and double-handed ocean sailing. Students look at how circadian rhythms are disrupted as one sails round the world, after months of environmental changes. Students examine the distribution of the activity-sleep rhythm and what strategies sailors employ to sleep and adapt to the gruelling course.

Ocean sailing puts sailors through the toughest physical, mental and environmental conditions, and that can take its toll on their health. In a round the world regatta such as the Barcelona World Race, which lasts for three months, the sailors race for weeks on end in some of the planet's most inhospitable and remote waters. That's why it's important for them to have a high level of hygiene and medical knowledge to help them to survive and overcome any illnesses, injuries or physiological disturbances they may experience out on the ocean. With that in mind, the sailors have a remote medical care service available to them, set up by the regatta organisers and based on the latest telecommunications technologies.During this course, you will learn about the basic medical techniques for the prevention of medical problems on board a yacht, how to plan medical prevention and active techniques to deal with some of the main issues that may arise during a two-crew round the world regatta. You will also be introduced to telemedical assistance protocols and the technology associated with it.This course is aimed at the general public and anyone with an interest in sailing or medicine. It is also aimed at those involved in the world of sailing who are interested in dealing with health issues in a straightforward and quick manner, either on board a boat or in a maritime context. It's also aimed at healthcare professionals who want to expand their knowledge of sailing and want to prepare a first aid kit with the basic materials to deal with small problems on board. The content may also be relevant and provide knowledge for trainee doctors and nurses or for those volunteering for sea or coastal rescue organisations (Red Cross, Sea Rescue or Lifeguards).
Eating well in a round the world regatta is no easy task. On one hand, the nutritional requirements are incredibly high, and on the other the foodstuffs taken on board must weigh as little as possible, withstand a moist environment with huge variations in temperature and be storable in a safe and organised manner.Nutritional content needs to be high and to respond to the requirements of incredible physical and mental strain, often in extreme climate conditions. In this course you will learn about the types of food taken on board for a Barcelona World race, how menus are designed, and incorporating freeze-dried foods, which continue to maintain their organoleptic qualities despite undergoing manipulation to ensure they weigh as little as possible and are long-lasting and stable. In this course we will also look at calculating nutritional requirements and how to plan a diet to guarantee maximum performance in the training, sailing and round the world racing periods.Projects associated with the Barcelona World Race 2014/15:The development of foodstuffs with a very high nutritional and organoleptic value with the Torribera UB Food Campus, the El Celler de Can Roca restaurant, the Les Cols restaurant and the companies Sosa Ingredients and Telstar.During this research project, six dishes have been formulated: Hummus, Salmorejo and Rice Pudding by Celler de Can Roca, and Potatoes in their juices, Cream of Buckwheat and Rice with tinned squid.

In acute ischemic stroke, the first objective is to restore brain flow using sistemic thrombolytic treatment and, in patients with large vessel occlusion, by endovascular treatment. In hemorrhagic stroke there are also specific treatments that can improve the clinical outcome. The sooner the initiation of all these therapies the higher the clinical benefit. Thus, the organization of Stroke Code systems coordinated between emergency medical systems and hospitals is crucial to achieve early medical attention and treament.Neurological scales facilitate stroke recognition at both hospital and pre-hospital levels and provide valuable information of stroke severity. The RACE scale is a prehospital scale validated as a tool to identify patients with suspected large vessel occlusion who are potential candidates for endovascular treatment. This course aims to update general knowledge in acute stroke and currently available treatments, to review the protocolof the Stroke Code and, finally, to train in the use of the RACE scale. The target profile of this course is aimed to all health professionals working in the field of emergencies.
