The Iowa Caucuses are the earliest indicator of a contender’s viability for the Democratic and Republican nomination for that year’s Presidential election. It is a unique process attracting media attention from around the world. Participants of this class will learn how the caucus process works, the history of the caucuses, their future, and the impact of Iowa’s status as the first political battleground. Four sessions, each four weeks long, will be offered beginning in September 2015 and leading right up to the Iowa caucuses in February 2016. Participants can enroll in any of the sessions and work at their own pace to complete the various units. The MOOC will feature videos, readings, small lectures, and interactive forums for discussion with other participants. A "Certificate of Participation” will be awarded at the end of each session. A wrap up following the Iowa Caucuses will be published on the Iowa Presidential Caucuses web site.
This course provides current and aspiring K–12 teachers with research-based practical guidelines and strategies to effectively teach mathematics to English language learners (ELLs).
As a unique collaboration of units across Iowa State University and the state of Iowa, “Teaching and Learning Iowa History” is a much-needed response to the lack of resources related to Iowa state history education. Despite statewide interest in Iowa history as documented by the Department of Cultural Affairs, there are few opportunities to learn about it—especially history related to social justice and diversity. In addition, the Iowa Department of Education (IDOE) has surveyed teachers across the state and found that there are currently very few social studies education professional development opportunities for Iowa teachers.“Teaching and Learning Iowa History” helps to fill that void by providing an innovative approach to connecting the general public, university students, and pre- and in-service teachers interested in learning more about Iowa history. This summer, our focus is on Iowans and the Civil Rights Movement in order to understand the roots of racism in the state and struggles for racial justice through the 19th and 20th centuries.
