Fake news is a real problem. From allegations of election fraud to Pizzagate, fake news saturates our newsfeeds-- and our national discourse. Some say it has compromised the authority of journalism, others say writing fake news stories has brought them a fistful of money. What do we make of this phenomenon? Why is fake news so prevalent these days? And how should we respond?In this 2-week course, we’ll pose these questions (and more) to scholars, working journalists, and media pundits in order to get a hold on this complicated issue. Our world is in a data deluge with ever increasing sizes of datasets. Linear algebra is a tool to manage and analyze such data.This course is part 2 of a 2-part course, with this part extending smoothly from the first. Note, however, that part 1, is not a prerequisite for part 2. In this part of the course, we'll develop the linear algebra more fully than part 1. This class has a focus on data mining with some applications of computer graphics. We'll discuss, in further depth than part 1, sports ranking and ways to rate teams from thousands of games. We’ll apply the methods to March Madness. We'll also learn methods behind web search, utilized by such companies as Google. We'll also learn to cluster data to find similar groups and also how to compress images to lower the amount of storage used to store them. The tools that we learn can be applied to applications of your interest. For instance, clustering data to find similar movies can be applied to find similar songs or friends. In this professional certificate program, you have the opportunity to build and leverage your data skills for upward mobility at any stage in your career. You’ll learn the six steps of the data lifecycle, using different case studies and contexts. You will analyze, manage, and communicate data, working in R to achieve basic R programming competencies. Medical Genomics 101 (CME) is for Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners seeking CME credit. You must be registered with the Charlotte Area Healthcare Education Center to receive credit.If you are taking this course for CME credit, please CLICK HERE to register and you will be directed to that version of the course.This continuing medical education course includes six modules which cover various areas of medical genomics including: Introduction to Genomics, Variation, Microbiome, Pharmacogenomics, in vitro (IVF) and Fetal medicine, and Oncology.Each module defines common terms, shows examples of data, and how healthcare is changing due to genomic insights. Each module also contains ethical, legal, and social implications of genomics in medical treatment. All modules contain five multiple choice questions to assess learning gains.Interspersed in each module are multiple interviews with practicing healthcare workers who have first hand experience with medical genomics and how the standards of care are changing. How do memes circulate? Why do memes circulate? What does it mean to express your feelings, attitudes, and even politics through memes? This three day mini course introduces you to the history of GIFs and memes, surveys the use and abuse of memes, and asks you to make your own memes. By the end of the course, you’ll have a better understanding of meme culture and be able to engage more deeply with this new folk art form.
This course is seven weeks long; new weeks will release every Monday at 14:00 UTC (10 am ET in the United States) and remain open until two weeks after the final week is released. We strongly encourage you to remain with the pace of the course. The class is heavily discussion-based, and discussions will be most active around the most current week.
