भारतीय शास्त्रीय वाङ्मय में दर्शन का स्थान अत्यन्त महत्त्वपूर्ण है। यह दर्शन आस्तिक तथा नास्तिक के भेद से दो प्रकार का होता है।आस्तिक दर्शनों में न्याय,वैशेषिक,सांख्य,योग,मीमांसा,वेदान्त दर्शन प्रसिद्ध है। इन षड्विध दर्शनों में न्यायवैशेषिक दर्शन का अन्यतम स्थान है। भारतीय अर्थशास्त्र के प्रसिद्ध विद्वान् कौटिल्य ने इस दर्शन के विषय में अपना उद्गार व्यक्त करते हुए कहा है-प्रदीपः सर्वविद्यानामुपायः सर्वकर्मणाम्।आश्रयः सर्वधर्माणां विघोद्देशे प्रकीर्तिता।।—अर्थशास्त्रइस न्याय दर्शन के प्रवर्तक आचार्य महर्षि गौतम हैं। जिन्होंने न्यायसूत्र का निबन्धन किया है। इस दर्शन में पाँच अध्याय, दश आह्निक, 84 प्रकरण तथा 528 सूत्र हैं। महर्षि गौतम ने प्रमाण प्रमेय निग्रहस्थान नामक सोलह पदार्थों का निरूपण इस दर्शन में किया है। आत्मा,शरीर,इन्द्रिय,अर्थ,बुद्धि,मन,प्रवृत्ति,दोष,प्रेत्यभाव,फल, दुख तथा अपवर्ग इन द्वादश प्रमेयों की चर्चा इस दर्शन में हुई है। इसके साथ ही वैशेषिक सूत्रकार महर्षि कणाद के द्वारा प्रणीत वैशेषिक सूत्र में प्रतिपादित द्रव्यादि सात पदार्थों का तथा पृथिव्यादि नव द्रव्यों का भी सुचारु निरूपण किया गया है। प्रत्यक्ष, अनुमान, उपमान तथा शब्द प्रमाण का विशद विवेचन न केवल न्यायदर्शन के लिए अपितु समग्र दर्शनसम्प्रदाय के लिए उपकारी है। इस शास्त्र के लिए संशय को आधार माना गया है। निर्णीत अथवा अनुपलब्ध अर्थ में न्याय की प्रवृत्ति नहीं होती है अपितु सन्दिग्ध अर्थ में ही न्यायशास्त्र की प्रवृत्ति होती है। अतएव न्याय भाष्यकार ने कहा है—नानुपलब्धे न निर्णीतेऽर्थेन्यायः प्रवर्तते अपितु संशयितेऽर्थे न्यायः प्रवर्तते। इस प्रकार न्यायशास्त्र की उपयोगिता वर्तमान सन्दर्भ में अत्यन्त प्रायोगिक है।

भारतीयदर्शनस्य संस्कृतसाहित्यस्य प्रादेशिकभाषीयसाहित्यस्य च समग्रं वाङ्मयम् वृक्श्तुल्यम्। तस्य विस्तरः महान अस्ति। बद्धमूलः अयं वृक्शः अतः एव महान् वर्तते, सनातनः वर्तते, चिरञ्जीवी अपि वर्तते। एतस्य वृक्शस्य मूलम् अपरिवर्तनीयम् अस्ति। परन्तु नूतनं पल्लवम्, नूतनानि पुष्पाणि, नूतनानि फलानि च नित्यं जायन्ते। किं तत् मूलम् इति स्वाभाविकीं जिग्यासां देशविदेशेषु जनाः कुर्वन्ति। यः कोऽपि तत्र प्रयत्नपरः भवति सः सुफलं लभते एव। सः चिराय कृतार्थो भवति, कृतकृत्यः च भवति। किं तत् मूलम्। कः तस्य बोद्धा , का तस्य शाखा, कानि वा पुष्पाणि फलानि च। का तस्य छाया। कः तस्य सौरभः। के उपभोक्तारः। कतिविधाः ते सन्ति इति ईदृशं वैचित्र्यम् अस्य विषयस्य विषयः। परन्तु तस्य वृक्शस्य मूलं किम्। समग्रस्यापि अस्य विषयस्य तु उपन्यासः नैव सम्भवति। तथापि छात्राः यदि इतः किञ्चिदपि ग्यातुं शक्नुयुः तर्हि अस्माकं प्रयत्नः सफलः इति मन्यामहे। भारतीयसमाजस्य मनोरञ्जनं जीवनं वैनन्दिनव्यवहारः धर्माचरणम् आध्यात्मिकता इति समग्रस्य मूलम् गौरवशाली वेदः एव। भारतीयचिन्तने वैदिकवाङ्मयस्य वैशिष्टयं सुविदतं समेषां वेदितवेदितव्यानाम्। वैदिकवाङ्मयस्य विभूतिः वास्तविकी वर्तते। इदं वाङ्मयं प्राचीनम्, समग्रपृथिवीव्यापि, अस्य परिमाणं विशालम् , अस्य वैभवं निरतिशयम् , अस्य सौन्दर्यगुणः अनन्यतुल्यः। महत् मौलिकं पुरातनं च इदं वाङ्मयम्। अत एव तत्र अस्माकम् अभिनिवेशः प्रवृत्तिः जिग्यासा श्रद्धा च वर्तन्ते। न केवलम् एतावन्मात्रम्। अन्यानि अपि निमित्तानि वैदिकवाङ्मयस्य अध्ययने विद्मार्थिनां कृते विशिषटाम् अभिरुचिं जनयन्ति। वेदस्य सम्यक् ग्यानस्य अभावे नैके धर्मसम्प्रदायाः मतानि आचाराः च प्रवर्तन्ते येषां प्रतिपाद्यं दुषटं शास्रविरुद्ध च वर्तते। समाजः धर्मविषये अत्यन्तम् अन्धश्रद्धालुः भवति। अन्धश्रद्धानिवारणायापि वेदस्याध्ययनं नितान्तम् आवश्यकम्। विग्यानस्याध्ययनम् उदपूरणाय। जीवनयात्रानिर्वाहाय। परन्तु जीवः कुतः आयाति, कुत्र गच्छति, तस्य सुखदुःखादीनां कारणानि कानि। इह लोकः परलोकः अस्ति वा न वा। पुनर्जन्म अस्ति वा न वा। यदि स्यात् तर्हि मर्त्येन​ किमपि कर्तव्यं न वा इति अयं समग्रो विषयः न विग्यानाधीनः। अयं तु धर्मधीनः। तस्यैव समग्रस्य धर्मस्य मूलं वेदः। अतः जीविकार्थम् विग्यानम् सुखदुःखनिर्णयाय इहपरलोकयात्रायै च वेदः इति सुष्ठु विभागः भवति। अतः वेदाध्ययनं सर्वेरपि सुतराम् कर्तव्यमेव।
