Integrating Climate Risk Information into NAPs

In a world that is looking less likely to stay within 2°C of global warming compared to the pre-industrial levels, individuals need to make choices between a range of possible actions requiring information on past, present and potential future climate conditions. Adapting to climate change requires the development of the best available scientific information about climate trends and their societal impacts.  The course Integrating Climate Risk Information into NAPs shows how to strengthen National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) through appropriate climate information and coordinated policy action, enabling  different types of institutions and actors to work together in a collaborative framework, drawing on the resources of the global hydro-meteorological community at large.

The Strategic Alliance on Green Bond Market Development in G20 Emerging Economies (STA), a partnership between Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) are pleased to present this new e-learning course on Sustainable Finance.This interactive and practice-oriented course covers the basics of Sustainable Finance while providing several opportunities to dive deeper. It shares valuable insights of the Strategic Alliance of GIZ and SEB and our technical partner CICERO, gained during activities in emerging economies and interactions with market participants worldwide. You will also learn about examples of UN-supported initiatives to promote sustainable finance in countries like Mongolia and Indonesia. The course is designed for interested participants from governments, financial sector, businesses, and civil society.

Climate Change International Legal Regime

The Climate Change International Legal Regime course presents the causes and effects of climate change, describes the mechanisms established by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and explains the key provisions and commitments under the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. This introductory course is divided into 3 modules, each including 2 interactive lessons, resources for additional learning as well as a final summary, and taking an average of 1 hour to complete. A short quiz at the end of each module allows you to verify if you have achieved the learning objectives. 
The course has been developed by the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. It is made available on UN CC:e-Learn through the new UN CC:Learn affiliation programme, which highlights high-quality e-learning products on climate change developed by recognized institutions outside the framework of the UN CC:Learn programme / without support from the UN CC:Learn Secretariat, in accordance with specific affiliation criteria. The objective of the UN CC:Learn affiliation programme is to enhance global climate literacy through dissemination of high-level learning products that complement UN CC:Learn resources.


Advancing on REDD+

While how to prepare and implement REDD+ at the national level through a National Strategy or Action Plan was covered in the course Fundamentals on REDD+, Advancing on REDD+ discusses in more detail the other three REDD+ elements, to which it adds the importance of engaging in the process the relevant stakeholders and the principles of a good governance. It is structured into 6 modules, and each module takes around 2 to 3 hours to complete.All modules include an introductory video lecture, an interactive lesson and a learning journal in PDF format. The modules also include links to other UN resources on REDD+, which provides a gateway to more in-depth and specific information.The modules have been developed and peer-reviewed by UN-REDD and UN CC:Learn. 

Green Industrial Policy

Over two and a half centuries, the model of economic development based on wide-spread industrialization has given rise to both unprecedented prosperity and global ecological threats. Climate change, environmental pollution, biodiversity loss and ubiquitous waste accumulation are severely undermining the material conditions on which continued progress relies. Conventional industrial policy has been a major ingredient of human development as much as it has contributed to environmental risks through unsustainable resource consumption and linear production models.It is abundantly clear today that a new model of economic development is urgently needed – one that can deliver prosperity, withstand economic shocks and sustain a healthy environment within the contours of a finite planet. Green industrial policy can be part of the answer by addressing market failures and advancing structural change in those components of the economy that account for a large share of resource use and waste production on the one hand, and infrastructure, technological development and employment on the other.Against this background, the course sets out to provide trainers, educators and policymakers with a scientifically sound foundation, didactic instruments and learning material to gain a thorough understanding of the main tenets of green industrial policy and their application around the world. 

Indicators for an inclusive green economy: Advanced course

The course explores the conceptual underpinning of the GEP Measurement Framework and how it contributes to the “beyond GDP” measurement agenda. Firstly, it explains how progress (or regress) on a single indicator can be measured and how these indicators can be combined into the GEP Index with its weighting system. Secondly, it describes how to measure progress on a Dashboard of Sustainability and how to combine this information with the GEP Index to create a system for ranking countries that is informative to policymakers.

Climate Change, Peace and Security: Understanding Climate-Related Security Risks Through an Integrated Lens

Climate change is considered by many as among the greatest risks for peace and security in the 21st century. As the planet’s temperature rises, extended droughts, rising sea levels, and more frequent and intense storms are affecting the lives and livelihoods of people in all corners of the globe. Particularly in conflict affected settings, these impacts can compound economic, social or political drivers of insecurity, leaving already vulnerable populations on the frontlines of multiple, intersecting crises.This self-paced, online course unpacks the interlinkages between climate change, peace and security and explores opportunities for promoting inclusive climate action, conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Recognizing that challenges associated with climate change and insecurity do not impact everyone equally, the course includes a special focus on assessing the ways gender norms and other factors of social identity shape how people from different backgrounds experience and respond to these emerging risks.  Upon completion, course participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to analyze different contexts affected by climate change and insecurity, and design interventions to prevent and manage associated risks.This course is designed to benefit a broad range of policymakers, practitioners, and researchers. The more advanced modules are particularly relevant for political analysts and peacebuilding practitioners, climate adaptation specialists, and gender and inclusion advisors.

World trade patterns show that while many developing countries are now playing an increasing role in trade, many other—and particularly least developed countries who account for less than 1% of all global trade—remain stranded on the margins. Still heavily reliant on natural resource-based products and raw materials for their exports, these countries are highly vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks.The transition to an inclusive green economy represents many significant opportunities. By harnessing the increasing global demand for environmental goods and services, as well as consumer demand for more sustainable products, countries can diversify their economies, reduce their commodity dependence and boost their competitiveness. Thus, societies promote long-term, sustainable development while also strengthening their capacity to tackle the manifold environmental challenges lying ahead.Trade can also power a green economic recovery from COVID-19. Global demand for environmental goods and services is expected to rise as countries roll out economic stimuli with larger earmarks for climate-friendly solutions. While this course was developed prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, its contents therefore remain relevant to current policy discussions.One practical challenge lies in ensuring that countries are both aware of these opportunities and that they possess the knowledge and skills to take advantage of them. To address this challenge, the course sets out to provide interested participants from government, business, and civil society with an introduction to the various approaches that may be taken to harness green trade opportunities.

Green Fiscal Policy

However, long before the pandemic hit nations across the world, many economies were marked by harmful and inefficient use of public and private resources, reinforcing environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, global warming and vulnerabilities linked to health and social exclusion. In the wake of the health and economic crisis, citizens are increasingly demanding a departure from business-as-usual approaches in favour of truly innovative and green policies. Similarly, many governments recognize that the transformative potential of this circumstance must not be wasted.Greening recovery efforts can help nations build forward better after the pandemic to increase the well-being of people and resilience of countries to future crises. Green fiscal policies in particular can play a key role in countries’ recovery efforts by removing inefficiencies in public expenditures and raising additional fiscal revenues which can be directed towards immediate COVID-19 relief measures while supporting longer-term investments.  While this course was developed prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, its contents therefore remain relevant to current policy discussions.One practical challenge lies in ensuring that countries are both aware of these opportunities and that they possess the knowledge and skills to take advantage of them. To address this challenge, the course sets out to provide interested participants from government, business, and civil society with an introduction to the green fiscal policy tools and approaches to foster a more sustainable future.
